The Golden Age of Athens only lasted about 30 years, under the rule of a great leader, Pericles. But the influence of this short time lives on in nearly every culture in the western world. After the Golden Age, things were very different. The leader Pericles died while Athens was at war with Sparta (they were always at war with Sparta). There was a lot of chaos, tyrants and other bad stuff. Then Philip II of Macedonia conquered all of Athens, and then his son, Alexander began to build a huge empire all over the eastern Mediterranean.

Greece: The Rough Guide - We used the Rough Guide for most of our visit to Greece. The info was generally very good, but finding things in the book was difficult. Maps were poor. It did help us find inexpensive lodging! (We stayed at the cheapest place in Athens, no kidding! It was OK, but three days was enough.) |
